The University of Latvia is located in the city of Riga and offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels of study.A big number of students, including PhD and exchange students, has enrolling in various study programs every year. Almost of third of them studied in business and economics related programs.
Studies in Latvian higher education institutions take place in the Latvian language; individual study programmes and subjects are taught also in English or other foreign languages.

How to apply

The academical year is divided in two semesters – in autumn semester (from September till January) and in spring semester (from February till June).

International students for degree studies should submit the following documents to the Student Services/Faculty of Medicine of the University of Latvia by May 15 (EU citizens by July 15) (unless specified otherwise in the program description).

Application documents without included all required attachments and application fee payment confirmation will be understood as un-valid and will not be forwarded for further processing.

International degree students conclude study agreement with the chosen faculty. The agreement stipulates study programme, type of study, length of study and study fee.

For the international degree students the visa and residence permits arrangement is under the responsibility of the Student Services of University of Latvia.

Student Scholarships and Exchanges

Based on bilateral and trilateral intergovernmental and interministerial agreements on co-operation in education and science, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Latvia, in the framework of its annual budget, offers scholarships to students and teaching staff of several countries for studies and research work in state higher education institutions, as well as for participation in summer schools.
The eligible countries whose citizens can apply for the Latvian scholarship are the following: Azerbaijan, Czech Republic, Greece, Belgian Flanders Community and Belgian French Community, China, Estonia, Israel, Lithuania, Moldova, Mongolia, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Slovenia, Hungary.
The Ministry of Education and Science does not grant scholarships for part-time or extramural studies.
Scholarships are granted for the time period up to 10 months. In special cases a scholarship may be prolonged for a longer period. The final decision on granting scholarships is made by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Latvia.
The exchange students will receive information on scholarships from their home university’s co-ordinator. The home university or home country pays a scholarship for Erasmus students.

According to some of the bilateral cooperation agreements the University of Latvia is paying a monthly scholarship to the exchange students who are studying within these agreements. If there are any financial benefits coming from the University of Latvia, it is mentioned on the acceptance letter sent to the student by the International Relations Department.
