University of Luxembourg
The University of Luxembourg is founded on 13 August 2003 and is the only university in Luxembourg. Before that, there were several higher educational institutions (cour universitaire or the IST) that offered one or two years of academic studies. Luxembourgish students had to go abroad in order to complete the university studies (usually to Belgium, France, Germany, Austria, and the United Kingdom). The new university makes it possible for these students to study in their own country, as well as attract foreign students to Luxembourg. Courses are usually held in two languages: French/English, French/German, or English/German.
How to apply
The enrolment procedure depends on several criteria relating to your personal situation. Enrolment at the University of Luxembourg is personal, required (for it alone confers the status of student), and semestral (it must be renewed at the beginning of each semester).
• Future student
You have recently graduated from secondary school and have chosen to attend the University of Luxembourg. For your first enrolment, you are advised to proceed as follows:
1. Consult the enrolment periods for each degree program.
2. Proceed to your application for admission.
• Student at the UL
If you are a student already enrolled at the University of Luxembourg, you have to proceed to a re-enrolment (even if you have interrupted your studies at our university or if you wish to change degree program).
Financial assistance from the Luxembourg Government is granted through the CEDIES (Centre de Documentation et d’Information sur l’Enseignement supérieur) to all students who are enrolled for higher studies and fulfil one of the following conditions:
• they have the Luxembourgish nationality and reside in Luxembourg;
• they are nationals of a member state of the European Union, reside in Luxembourg and are concerned by the regulation (EEC) No 1612/68 on freedom of movement for workers within the Community;
• they are third-country nationals or stateless, have resided in Luxembourg for at least 5 years and hold a secondary school leaving certificate recognized by the Luxembourg Ministry of Education (Ministère de l’Education nationale et de la Formation professionnelle);
• they have the status of a political refugee in Luxembourg and reside in Luxembourg.
This financial assistance from the government can consist only of a loan or be granted partly as a loan and partly as a scholarship. If you have applied for financial aid at the CEDIES and spend a mobility semester abroad, the granted amount of money can be adapted.
Erasmus grant (only if you study abroad within the framework of the Erasmus programme)
If you study abroad as an Erasmus student, you are awarded an Erasmus grant. The grant application is to be handed in to SEVE Mobility together with all other application documents.
As soon as the SEVE Mobility receives your certificate of arrival duly signed by the host institution, the first 75% of the total amount of the grant are paid. The last 25% are paid upon reception of the certificate of departure, which attests to the real duration of the stay abroad. The granted amount can be adapted according to the real duration of the stay.
Scholarship for non-European students
If you were awarded a scholarship for non-European students and spend a semester abroad, the amount of the scholarship can be adapted.
