Dublin City University (DCU)

Dublin City University is located in the capital of the Republic of Ireland. It was established in 1975 under the name National Institute for Higher Education, Dublin. It wasn’t until 1989 that it acquired its university status. Considered unconventional at the time, Dublin City University was the first university in Ireland that introduced interdisciplinary studies, meaning that for example science students could take business courses, business students could take languages and language students could take computing. It was also the the first university in Ireland to introduce work placement (INTRA) as part of its degree programmes, helping students put their academic skills into practice in a work environment.

DCU currently hosts around 10,000 students enrolled as full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as students studying under the Distance Education degree program. Dublin City University provides students with the opportunity to choose one of the 80 degree programs that matches their interests.
DCU is structurally divided into the following faculties and schools: DCU Business School, Faculty of Engineering and Computing with the possibility of reading Computing, Electronic Engineering, or Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Faculty of Science and Health with the possibility of reading Biotechnology, Chemical Sciences, Health and Human Performance, Mathematical Sciences, Nursing or Physical Sciences, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences which is divided into the Applied Language and Intercultural Studies department, the Communications department, then Education Studies, Fiontar, the Institute of Ethics, Law and Government, and the Distance Education Program – Oscail.
