Some 16 percent of students come from abroad. According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities, the LMU is one of the highest ranked German university. With degree programs available in 150 subjects in numerous combinations, the array of courses is wide.

International network

LMU Munich has about 250 partnerships (see student exchange agreements) in conjunction with the EU mobility programs ERASMUS. Up to 900 students take advantage of this exchange program each year. Almost the same number of visiting academics come to Munich from its sister cities. Beyond the EU programs, over 20 comprehensive university collaboration projects enable academic exchange in several disciplines, facilitating the exchange of students, instructors and researchers and even degree programs. Along with that come another 80 exchange partnerships all over the world.

International students

LMU Munich is home to some 7600 foreign students from over 125 countries, about 16% of  total student body. This is the highest number and percentage of foreign students at any German university. Three quarters of these students come from Europe, 15% from Asia and 6% from North and South America.

The Studienkolleg Munich is designed to prepare students linguistically and academically who want to complete a normal degree in Bavaria but cannot provide a qualification equivalent to a German Abitur. LMU Munich also offers a preparatory semester for international student applicants (Profis), and the Fach- und Fremdsprachenprogramm (FFP), the instructors at German as a Foreign Language (DaF) and Deutschkurse für Ausländer all train students in German and other foreign languages before and during their studies.

Around 1500 visiting scholars are currently teaching and researching at LMU Munich. Around 70 are research fellows from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, representing the largest group of these acclaimed international scholars at any German university.
