Open to: Scholars and practitioners from around the world to work with water experts at UNC-CH in fields such as public policy, planning, sustainable development, hydrology, environmental engineering, global health and all aspects of WaSH
Fellowship: The maximum amount of support for a two-semester fellowship is 70,000

Description

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for fellowships at the Global Research Institute (GRI), a world-leading think tank on salient global issues. During academic years 2012-13 and 2013-14, the GRI is focusing on the challenges faced by a world population likely to rise to 9 or 9.5 billion by mid-century, seeking to provide water, sanitation and hygiene for all.

Briefly put, with urbanization advancing, and more and more of the world’s growing and increasingly urban population seeking their share of economic growth and development, demand for water, already furious, will intensify even further. Even in the face of these daunting challenges, however, researchers have pioneered new ways to use existing supplies of water more efficiently and to distribute such supplies more equitably, made advances in the fight against water-borne diseases, and met pressing environmental challenges. Awareness of both the value and cost of water is increasing and the era of “smart water” is clearly upon us. There is, then, much reason for hope, even optimism, going forward.

Fellowship

Research fellowships are available for one or two semesters. The maximum amount of support for a two-semester fellowship is 70K—applicants are strongly urged to apply for funding from other grant sources as well. All fellows will be provided an office in the FedEx Global Education Center and are expected to participate in the GRI’s biweekly seminar and to participate fully in the intellectual life of the institute and engage with the many members of the UNC-CH distinguished “water community.”

Eligibility

With the above considerations in mind, the GRI will offer a number of fellowships in 2012-13 and 2013-2014 to researchers working on topics germane to the themes outlined above. They encourage leading scholars and practitioners from around the world to work with water experts at UNC-CH in fields such as public policy, planning, sustainable development, hydrology, environmental engineering, global health and all aspects of WaSH.

Their goals in establishing in Chapel Hill a robust international cluster of innovative water experts are to spark new thinking, to enable transformational breakthroughs and, per our research theme, to make scarce water work for all. UNC-CH, with talented scholars such as those in the Institute for the Environment and the Water Institute , is well positioned to be an innovative, dynamic location for such research.

Application

To apply, click here to create an account. A research proposal of no more than 1500 words, a current cv, and contact information for three recommenders should be submitted by January 30, 2012. Selection of fellows shall be completed by February 27, 2012.

Description

The India Youth Forum is the brainchild of the Youth Time Movement, a group of young activists from across 11 countries who have taken it as their mission to craft a new future through active campaigning and dialogue. Their fundamental goal is to motivate and empower the youth of the world.

In the past, Youth Time has organized two youth forums, in 2010 and 2011, on the island of Rhodes in Greece. In total, over 300 young people from 70 different countries participated in these forums. The movement has also successfully conducted an international summer school in the Altai region. Furthermore, in 2011, they also set up a series of remote projects including an international competition on ‘Space and the future of mankind’, which marked the 50th anniversary of the first human flight into outer space. Some 600 works by young and talented architects, designers, web designers and journalists were entered. Sixty winners got the opportunity to see with their own eyes, and feel, a rocket being sent on a space mission at the Baikonur Cosmodrome. Another remote project was called, ‘My dream education’, which enabled us to assemble an ideal representation of youth education in different countries.

Their mission is to continuously challenge themselves and thus they present to you the India Youth Forum 2012, which will be held from 29 March to 1 April.

The theme for the India Youth Forum is ‘My Country of My Dreams’. We live in troubled times and the responsibility has come upon us to not only dream, but put our dreams into action and build the country of our dreams. The time has come for action and we must now move beyond constructive dialogue and implement our knowledge into a reality which will show effective results.

Costs

conference fee

Deadline: 3 February 2012
Open to: Individuals, grassroots groups, networks, and other organizations
Grant: Up to $4000

Description

A major part of Rising Voices’ mission to support and nurture underrepresented communities so that they can begin to take full advantage of participatory digital media tools has been our microgrants for citizen media outreach projects. Since 2007, these small grants provide an opportunity for individuals, grassroots groups, networks, and other organizations without significant access to larger funding to be able to pass along knowledge by teaching others in their community in the use of these tools, as well as to provide ongoing support.

Rising Voices is pleased to announce the 2012 open call for microgrant proposals, and they are currently accepting project proposals for funding up to $4,000 USD for global projects.

Eligibility

This funding opportunity is open to private individuals, groups, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). We encourage partnerships between individuals and organizations. For example, if an NGO does not have experienced citizen media trainers on staff, it would be extremely important that it seeks collaboration with the local blogging community to find the right trainer(s) with the necessary skills. Individual applicants might also find it highly beneficial to partner with organizations from the communities they plan to serve in order to strengthen the project’s impact and to have access to potential project participants.

There is no requirement for an organization to be legally registered, but we do require selected projects to have access to a bank account that is able to receive international bank transfers.

What Kind of Projects May be Funded

Rising Voices seeks project proposals that share the mission of bringing voices from new communities, as well as underrepresented language groups to the online global conversation through the use of participatory citizen media. The project’s primary activities should be to provide citizen media training workshops to the target community, as well vital ongoing support and mentoring.

Examples of potential projects may include:

Organizing a citizen media “boot camp” with experienced local bloggers to train and mentor participants from underrepresented communities that will result in a local network of support.

Working with an indigenous community to teach and encourage new generations to begin to use Twitter to connect with others as a way to preserve and promote their native language online.

Partnering with a local library with a computer to lab to invite community members to discuss local problems and solutions, and train them how to create a group blog to take these conversations to the wider community.

Organizing a series of digital photography group walks where residents can document life in their community together and create an online Flickr photography exhibit.

Teaching local residents to record and edit audio recordings on Audacity for a community podcast that can be uploaded online, as well as distributed to local radio stations for a wider reach.

Project ideas are not limited to these, and they encourage you to be creative, yet realistic in your proposals.

Grant

Rising Voices outreach grants will range from $2,000-4,000 USD. Please be as thoughtful, specific, and realistic as possible when drafting your budgets. Applicants are encouraged to submit budgets for less than the maximum $4,000 USD as smaller grants allow them to fund more projects.

Application

Interested applicants should complete the online proposal application form, which should also include a detailed budget. It is extremely important that applicants follow the word count guidelines for each of the questions.

If you would like to download the application questions to complete offline in order to upload later, please view or download the text document here (Google Doc format). However, all applications must be submitted online, and they cannot accept any additional attachments. Once you have submitted the application, you will see a confirmation screen like this. While they welcome and encourage projects from all corners of the global, all applications must be completed in English due to the common language of our selection committee.

Deadline for applications is 3 February 2012.

For more information please visit the official website or contact Rising Voices at eddie@globalvoicesonline.org
