Description

The Skoll Foundation presents the Skoll Awards for Social Entrepreneurship each year to a select few social entrepreneurs who are solving the world’s most pressing problems. The Skoll Award includes a core support grant to the organization, to be paid over three years, and a noncash award to the social entrepreneur presented at the Skoll World Forum on Social Entrepreneurship every spring.

The application process for the 2013 Skoll Awards is open from January 4 – March 1, 2012. A preview of the application can be viewed anytime. To be considered, organizations must meet this specific Awards criteria: Winners have a tested and proven social innovation that addresses an issue of critical importance and is positioned for large-scale impact.

Eligibility

The selection process for the Skoll Awards for Social Entrepreneurship is competitive. Hundreds of applications are submitted for the fewer than 10 Awards given annually. Not all organizations that meet the eligibility requirements and align with the criteria will receive an Award.

Qualifying organizations will be evaluated against the following criteria:

Impact potential: Organization’s innovation is positioned to directly affect policy, behavior and/or infrastructure/system(s) on a large scale and can show evidence of significant impact already achieved.

Inflection: Organization has a proven approach that has already been implemented with success and is now ready to apply the approach on a much larger scale.

Innovation: Organization has an approach that fundamentally disrupts the status quo to solve social and/or environmental problems.

Issue: Organization works on an issue that is identified by the Skoll Foundation as one of world’s most pressing problems.

Skoll leverage: Organization will benefit from engaging with Skoll Foundation beyond a purely funding relationship, such as collaboration with our network of entrepreneurs or access to media opportunities.

Social entrepreneur: Organization is led by a visionary social entrepreneur

Sustainability: Organization has a clear, compelling plan for expanding impact and achieving long-term financial and operational sustainability.

Skoll Award recipients typically exhibit many of the following characteristics:

Description

The International Music and Art Foundation was established with Charitable Status (Gemeinnuetzigkeit) in Vaduz, Liechtenstein on February 12, 1988 for the purpose of receiving funds from individuals and corporations for distribution in support of worthy arts organizations worldwide.

Established with the belief that, after all, our greatest legacy to future generations is art, the International Music and Art Foundation makes grants to facilitate the improvement and dissemination of the visual and performing arts, as well as the study and preservation of art and culture from the past. “Preservation” includes the conservation and restoration of individual works of art and architecture as well as cultural and environmental documentation and preservation. Specific interests of the Foundation include, but are not limited to, the fine arts (painting, drawing, sculpture), music, theatre, and architecture (“frozen music” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, 1829).

The Foundation wishes to encourage projects that promote values in line with their particular interests that are well informed, that have clearly defined goals, and that are innovative and risk-taking, while acknowledging traditional standards of excellence and responsibility to the art form.

Grants are not made for the establishment of new organizations, for travel expenses, nor for meetings, workshops, conferences, or seminars held for the purpose of planning or organizing a project or activity.

They prefer to learn about projects through informal investigations of what they find promising. Unsolicited applications as a rule will not be responded to.

Eligibility

The International Music and Art Foundation does not make grants to individuals, only to recognized and established organizations:

in the performing arts such as opera companies, symphony orchestras, chamber music ensembles, ballet and theater companies, etc.;

for architectural restorations and for the conservation of art;

to museums;

and for research and publication on the history of art.

Grant

With assets (Balance Sheet) of approximately 40,783,176 Swiss Francs as of 31 December 2010, the International Music and Art Foundation makes grants ranging in size from several hundred to several hundred thousand Swiss Francs, with most grants falling towards the median of 10,306 Swiss Francs. Our average grant is 46,644 Swiss Francs. Whenever possible, the Foundation prefers to issue challenge grants conditional on matching Foundation grants with funds from other sources. The Foundation prefers not to make grants for operational support.

Here you can find examples of recent grants awarded.

Application

If invited by the International Music and Art Foundation, applicants will be asked to send four copies of the following documents, or state the reason why a document can not be provided:

The budget.

Other donor contributions.

The organization’s recent audited financial statements.

A current list of the organization’s Board of Directors.

Evidence of tax-exempt status (or an excerpt from the Register of Commerce).

The organization’s Mission Statement.

Good proposals clearly state their purpose, envision sensible processes, and establish goals that are achievable. Proposed projects are first reviewed to determine if they fall within our interest and program guidelines; those that do not are declined. Projects that fall within IMAF’s guidelines are reviewed on a continuous basis to determine:

the proposal’s priority within the Foundation’s goals;

the artistic merit and/or quality;

that the potential results will have significant impact;

the financial soundness of the grantee.

Proposals should include a brief narrative explaining the importance of the project, how it relates to the Mission Statement of the International Music and Art Foundation, and should include specific plans for evaluating project activities. No special forms are required, nor is this invitation an indication that a project or organization will receive support or funding.

Proposed projects should demonstrate support by appropriate organizations and/or governmental units in the community where the project is to be carried out.

All grantees must provide detailed financial reports and maintain complete records documenting the use of the grant. The International Music and Art Foundation may make periodic site visits and whatever other investigations it deems important.

The Foundation expects tangible outcomes from grantees, and all grants will require a written report from the recipient detailing how the Foundation’s support was used and accounting for all expenditure of funds at the end of the grant period, or annually if the grant extends beyond one year.

Description

The Goethe-Institut’s translation grant programme “Translations of German books into other languages” provides support to non-German publishers with the publication of translated German titles. This enables important academic contributions, challenging fiction, literature for children and young adults, and selected non-fiction works, to be made accessible to non-German-speaking readers. The programme serves cultural-political aims and is an important guiding instrument of cultural and educational foreign policy. In cases where an application for a translation grant is successful, the Goethe-Institut contributes part of the translation costs to the publisher, payable on publication of the translated work. It is not envisaged that the Goethe-Institut will finance the full costs of the translation or printing or editorial costs.

The programme has been running for nearly 35 years, during which time they have given financial support to the publication of around 5000 books in 45 languages.

Priority is given to works in the following subject areas:

democracy, the rule of law, and civil society

current regional and global issues

the cultural dimension of European integration

recent German history

outstanding works of contemporary German literature

Consideration will also be given to:

classical German literature

contemporary drama

quality literature for children and young adults

Eligibility

Only non-German publishers are entitled to apply for translation grants.

Grant

In cases where an application for a translation grant is successful, the Goethe-Institut contributes part of the translation costs to the publisher, payable on publication of the translated work. It is not envisaged that the Goethe-Institut will finance the full costs of the translation or printing or editorial costs.

Application

The following documents are required:

a fully completed application form;

a legally valid licence agreement;

a legally valid translator’s contract;

justification of the project with information on the relevance of the work to the target sales audience, how it fits into the publisher’s list, and on why financial support is required

two copies of the German edition of the publication plus reviews. (Books and reviews should be requested from the German publisher and then forwarded to the Munich Central Office of the Goethe-Institut, Bereich 33, Literatur und Übersetzungsförderung.

Please submit the application form to the Goethe-Institut in your country. If there is no Goethe-Institut in your country, please contact the German embassy.

The Goethe-Institut in your country will evaluate your application. If an application is successful, the Goethe-Institut will forward the documents, together with a supporting statement, to the central office of the Goethe-Institut in Munich. There a committee will decide on the value of the sum to be granted. If an application is rejected, the Goethe-Institut in your country will inform you directly.

Application deadlines:

The committee meets four times a year as follows:

End of January: fiction; literature for children and young adults

End of April: all categories

End of July: fiction; literature for children and young adults

End of October: all categories

Next meeting:

The Goethe-Instituts accept applications all year round. They are dealt with at the next meeting due to take place. However, please note that applications which arrive less than four weeks before the next due meeting in Munich cannot usually be taken into consideration.

For academic works longer submission deadlines apply because a validation from the “Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft” (German research organisation) is required. In order to be able to process your application at the April meeting, the documents should have arrived by the 31st January at the Goethe-Institut’s central office, and for the October meeting by the 31st July.
