Deadline: 8 March 2012
Open to: Candidates with a doctorate or equivalent research experience
Fellowship: The Trust will contribute 50% of each Fellow’s total salary costs up to a maximum of £23,000 per annum and the balance is to be paid by the host institution

Description

Early Career Fellowships aim to provide career development opportunities for those who are at a relatively early stage of their academic careers but with a proven record of research. It is anticipated that a Fellowship will lead to a more permanent academic position. Applications are welcomed in any discipline, and approximately 80 Fellowships will be available in 2012. Fellowships can be held at universities or at other institutions of higher education in the UK.

Fellowship

The Trust will contribute 50% of each Fellow’s total salary costs up to a maximum of £23,000 per annum and the balance is to be paid by the host institution. Given the prestige of the awards each Fellow may request annual research expenses of up to £6,000 to further his or her research activities.

Please ensure that applications do not include any of the ineligible costs listed here.

Fellowships are normally tenable for three years on a full-time basis, but requests to hold the award part-time over a proportionately longer period will be considered if this is appropriate for the nature of the research proposed and the career development of the individual. Please note that Fellowships of 24 months are no longer offered by the Trust. Fellowships will commence between the beginning of the 2012/2013 academic year and 1 May 2013.

Eligibility

Applicants must not yet have held a full-time established academic post in a UK university or comparable UK institution, nor may Fellows hold such a post concurrently with the Early Career Fellowship. Those in receipt of a stipendiary Fellowship may not hold this at the same time as an Early Career Fellowship.

All candidates must hold a doctorate or have equivalent research experience by the time they take up the Fellowship. Those who are or have been registered for a doctorate at any time may apply only if they have submitted their doctoral thesis by the closing date of 4.00pm on 8 March 2012, and confirmation of this is required as part of the application procedure. Those who at the time of commencing the Fellowship are registered for or are intending to register for degrees, professional or vocational qualifications are not eligible.

Applications are invited from those with a doctorate who had their doctoral viva not more than 5 years from the application closing date. Hence those who had their viva before 8 March 2007 are not eligible unless they have since had a career break. Those wishing to make a case for a career break should present the case for interruption by a period of maternity leave, family commitments, illness, or other unusual circumstances.

Applicants must either hold a degree from a UK higher education institution at the time of taking up the Fellowship or at the time of application hold an academic position in the UK (e.g. fixed-term lectureship, fellowship). Applications from those having an association with the UK academic community of less than two years’ duration will be strengthened by a move of employing institution. The intention is to support the career development of those building an academic career within the UK.

Application

Applications must be submitted online by the closing date of 4.00pm on 8 March 2012. Statements from three nominated referees should also be submitted online as part of the application procedure.

The Trust will report results to applicants by the end of May 2012.

Please download a copy of the 2012 Scheme Leaflet & Help Notes and read through carefully before completing your application.

To access the online application system please click the link here and follow the instructions.

Deadline: 1 October 2012
Open to: All interested
Fellowship: A stipend to meet living costs in Oxford

Description

Media and Democracy in Central and Eastern Europe (MDCEE), is an interdisciplinary research project launched in October 2009 and is funded by the European Research Council.

The project aims to investigate the often troublesome and poorly understood relationship between democracy and the media in Central and Eastern Europe, but the findings should be more broadly applicable to consolidating democracies worldwide.

Applications are invited for short-term Visiting Fellowships for the academic years 2011-12 and 2012-13.

Fellowship

Successful applicants will work with the project on Media and Democracy in Central and Eastern Europe, which is sponsored by the European Research Council (ERC). Visiting Fellows will either help to collect and process empirical data from the region, or will focus on broader theoretical questions related to the project’s main theme. The project aims to establish what kind of democracy is needed for media to perform its agreed-upon normative functions. Our focus is on news media, including both “old media” (broadcast and print) and the “new media” of the Internet. The major research areas are:

Media ownership and commercial pressures

Media regulation and political pressures

Journalistic autonomy and professionalisation

Visiting Fellows will be expected to live in Oxford for a period of either one or two terms (three or six-months) between October and March each year. They will be expected to take an active part in various academic events organized within the project and to prepare for publication the findings of their work in Oxford.

Fellows will be based at St Antony’s College, University of Oxford and will be members of the University’s Department of Politics and International Relations during their stay.

Eligibility

All interested candidates are eligible to apply. A good spoken and written knowledge of English is essential, and the Fellowships carry a stipend to meet living costs in Oxford.

Application

Applications, including a CV, a two-page outline research proposal, your preferred period of tenure and the names and contact details of two referees, should be sent to:

Project Administrator
E-mail: mdcee@politics.ox.ac.uk

Deadline for applications is up to the beginning of October 2012. There are no closing dates for the submission of an application and all applications will be acknowledged on receipt.

Deadline: 25 March 2012
Open to: Translators
Fellowship: Monthly stipend in the amount of EUR 2,250

Description

Since the end of the cold war, the conditions for intellectual productions in the South Eastern European region have improved noticeably. Despite this fact, the exchange of ideas and the reception of scientific literature are still afflicted with cultural as well as socio-economic asymmetries. Although important works are being published, they do not get the attention in the Western part of Europe that they deserve. To help change this current situation, by filling the gaps in the relevant literature on both sides and thus improve access to and exchange between so far isolated cultures, the Institute of Human Sciences started its translation programme in 1987.

ERSTE Foundation joined the Paul Celan Fellowship for Translators in 2005 as a new partner. Since 1987, more than 80 translators from 16 different countries have worked within the scope of the scholarship. The scholarship holders spend between three and six months in Vienna, receive a hosted flat, a well-equipped office and, of course, a scholarship. Furthermore, they become part of everyday life of the Institute for Human Sciences.

Eligibility

The Paul Celan Fellowships support Western to Eastern translations, or between two Eastern European languages, and especially Eastern to Western translations of canonical texts and contemporary key works in the Humanities, Social Sciences and Cultural Studies. Special emphasis is put on translations of relevant works written by East European authors and/or by female gendered scholars. A thematic relation to one of the IWM’s research fields is likewise welcomed.

Fellowship

Paul Celan Visiting Fellows are invited to spend three to six months at the IWM between July 2012 and June 2013 to pursue their translation projects while working in residence at the Institute. Fellows receive a monthly stipend in the amount of EUR 2,250 to cover all expenses related to the stay in Vienna. The IWM provides a personal office with internet access, in-house research facilities and other relevant resources in Vienna. Paul Celan Visiting Fellows participate in the scholarly community and activities of the IWM.

Application

The application consists of (in English or German):

the application form (please download: info.iwm.at/celan12.zip)

a curriculum vitae with a bibliography of translations and other relevant publications

the name of the author and the work to be translated (from the original language) and an explanation for the choice thereof

the exact number of pages

a contract or a letter of intent from a publisher

proof that the translator/publisher holds the rights to the translation and its publication (or has an option for them)

the planned date of publication

information on the program of the publishing house

Deadline for application is March 25, 2012.

Please send the application by mail to:
