Venue: 22 April – 2 May 2012, Alexandria (Egypt)

Description

The Euro-Mediterranean Academy for Young Journalists in cooperation with the Swedish Institute in Alexandria, Egypt invites young journalists from different media outlets (print, radio, tv, online, photojournalists) to participate in the third Euro-Mediterranean Academy for Young Journalists in Alexandria, Egypt from April 22nd 2012 to May 2nd 2012.

Born in 2007 at the Euro-Mediterranean Youth Parliament in Berlin, the first Academy was carried out in Jordan in 2008 with the support of the Goethe Institute and the Anna Lindh Foundation. This experience was brought forward in 2009 when the second edition of the Academy was implemented in Amsterdam. Today, EMAJ brings together more than 50 young journalists from both sides of the Mediterranean.

EMAJ mainstreams a new quality of news making through its intercultural webzine – an online hub for feature-based and culturally sensitive journalism. EMAJ bridges the gap between young media-makers of the Euro-Mediterranean. We build on the ever-growing network enthusiastic young professionals whose aim is to produce high quality news from both sides of the Mediterranean.

EMAJ 2012 is a ten-day high-quality training course focused on the theme “Social Media in a Changing World”. During EMAJ, participants will experience and experiment Intercultural Journalism built around the concept of dialogue and mutual understanding.

New media have revolutionized communications. Offering higher interactivity, quicker reports, easy access to powerful and ever-growing social networks, these media constitute today new and exciting tools in journalistic practice.

EMAJ 2012 aims to provide high-quality training on new media in addition to inspiration and possibilities to reflect on the role of these technological innovations. As new media have played an important role in promoting social, political and economic change in many countries of the Euro-Mediterranean, the Academy will look at the insights of communication processes that occur through these tools.

Programme

The programme of the Academy will be divided into a theoretical and a practical section. Through training sessions and expert lectures on relevant topics in the field of New Media, Journalism, and Intercultural Dialogue and discussions of the role of media, the participants will decide on a media product and develop a common editorial line. In inter-regional teams the participants will be confronting each other’s different views, approaches and cultural backgrounds, working together on a common story.

The final outcomes will be published in a special edition of EMAJ Magazine and will constitute the basis of the printed report of EMAJ2012. Additionally a rich social and cultural programme will complement the schedule and allow all participants to get to know Alexandria and enjoy the intercultural exchange.

The working language of the EMAJ2012 is English.

Description

Albania has just entered its 100th year of existence as an independent state, since the declaration of Independence from the Ottoman Empire in November of 1912. The century of existence of Albania has had a tremendously rich and diverse history featuring celebratory, contradictable and undisclosed phenomena.

The Albanian state had a strongly precarious birth and first years of existence given the hostile regional environment and the international relations it had at the time. This threatened existence persisted until the end of the World Wars with the establishment of the communist regime. Albania spent the next five decades under one of the most isolated, Stalinist-style regimes with severe consequences on its society and economy. The last 20 years have marked a controversial transition period, which despite Albania entry to the NATO alliance and some steps towards European integration, is agreed by most scholars to be still in the process.

The next ten years will be crucially important to Albania’s future and its prospects to establish democratic governance and to consolidate a functioning state that enjoys full legitimacy and provides basic public goods to its citizens. Similarly, they will be critical to the country’s capacity to build a developed capitalist economy based on free competition. Such a development process is in essence Albania’s Europeanization project.

Therefore, the Albanian Institute for International Studies, the Albanian Media Institute and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (Albania) will organize an international symposium: Albania in the next ten years – envisioning the future, which will gather renown scholars, historians, political scientists, economist, civil society figures and a variety of other experts in the related fields.

The first part of the symposium will be dedicated to discussing important historical phases of the existence of the Albanian state.

The second part will focus more on presentations that elaborate future scenarios for Albania, taking into account a range of possibilities. Panellists will be encouraged to treat a rich spectre of variables in determining hypothetic future placements of the Albanian state and society and elaborate on potential challenges that the country is likely to face in the next decade.

Topics include but are not limited to:

Important historical phases of the existence of the Albanian state, – The objective is discerning patterns of development in Albanian state and society which help to foresee the challenges of the future.

Future scenarios for Albania, - Panelists will be encouraged to treat a rich spectre of variables in determining hypothetic future placements of the Albanian state and society and elaborate on potential challenges that the country is likely to face.

Eligibility

All interested scholars and researchers are invited to make their contributions in the area of their interest/expertise.

Costs

Participation related expenses will be covered by the organizers. Selected papers will be published in English and Albanian in a dedicated symposium volume.

Venue

The event will take place in Tirana on the 29th and 30th of March, 2012.

Deadline for applications is 13 February 2012.

Deadline: 13 February 2012
Open to: Professionals and volunteers closely involved in youth policy processes in their youth organisations and countries, young multipliers closely involved in democratic youth movements in their countries, leaders of youth organisations having an active role in the developments of the Arab spring, bloggers and youth workers
Venue: Malta 22-24 March 2012

Description

The South-Mediterranean youth policy cooperation of the partnership between the European Union (EU) and the Council of Europe in the field of youth, the League of Arab States (LAS) and other actors started in 2005. The cooperation aims at developing a common understanding and exchange of issues of specific concern for youth policy in Europe and South Med region. Since 2006, other national and international stakeholders of youth policy in European and South Med countries have become involved and extended
the framework of this informal cooperation. The activities carried out brought together youth researchers, governmental institutions responsible for youth policy and nongovernmental youth organisations in European and South Med countries. Among other results, the cooperation has supported the process of the Euro-Arab Coordination Meeting of Youth Organisations (EACMYO), created possibilities for direct exchanges between South Med and European youth leaders through relevant youth forums, and provided opportunities for capacity-building of civil society youth organisations through training courses on human rights education, intercultural dialogue and youth participation.

The process of changes brought about by the “Arab Spring” in various countries provides the context and drives the need for re-visiting this cooperation. The seminar on empowerment of youth organisations and youth led civil society in the SouthMediterranean framework hereby presented, is the first step in this direction: it provides youth non-governmental organisations and stakeholders the opportunity to reflect upon recent developments and their implications for the future youth policy cooperation so as to safeguard ownership of the process among stakeholders and to ensure a sustainable long-term perspective.

The events in a number of countries in the Arab region since the beginning of 2011 have imposed a new perception of young people’s capacities and aspirations. As crucial actors in the processes of political changes, young people have stood up for more freedom,
equality and justice. But they also stand up for better future perspectives in education and work, economic and social development and participation in the decision making process.

Furthermore the role and organisation of youth policy needs to be reviewed.
International youth policy cooperation has also an important role to play. Despite the obvious differences between the Arab and European regions, it is clear that both are affected by consequences of globalisation processes. The massive spread of global communication, and particularly social media, has become a new and powerful vehicle for young people to get organised and participate, to be informed and to spread information.

Youth organisations in Europe might be interested to learn from the efficient use of social networks and online media by youth organisations in the South-Mediterranean region.

This seminar will focus on the role and status of youth organisations/youth movements and the young people they work with as crucial actors in the development and consolidation of inclusive, participatory and pluralistic democracies based on human rights and the rule of law. Furthermore, this seminar will give opportunity for a joint analysis on the impact of youth (organisations) on the Arab revolutions and vice versa, their role within the resulting transition process.

Objectives:

To exchange on the current effects of Arab spring on civil society and develop a shared understanding of the current situation of young people in the South Med region as well as in European countries and their role in on-going processes of change;

To understand the implications of this transition to democracy for the reality of youth, the youth agendas and for the landscape of youth led civil society organisations;

To strengthen and support the role of civil society and non governmental youth led organisations and networks by enabling young people to reflect on their needs in terms of capacity building and propose joint projects to be implemented on a long term basis in a wider partnership.

Organisers

Maltese Youth Agency a (Aġenzija Żgħażagħ), EU-CoE youth-partnership, League of Arab States, North-South Centre of the Council of Europe, Euromed Youth Platform.

Date and duration:

22-24 March 2012 (2 working days) (21st arrival, 24 th departure for participants, 25th departure for organisers and stakeholders).

Venue: Malta (details to be confirmed)

Venue: 5-6 October, 2012, in Berlin, Germany

Description

The “2012 Berlin Conference on Evidence for Sustainable Development” will be held on 5-6 October, 2012, in Berlin. It will be the 11th conference in the well-established series of Conferences on the Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change.

From climate change to stock market crashes, societies are increasingly confronted with complex, interconnected economic, social and environmental problems. Public and private decisions to meet these challenges affect future generations and – in a globalized world – oftentimes impact on societies abroad. Sustainable development has to take into account these complex, long term and side effects. This is why the evidence base of decision making is of growing importance. Many countries have established institutions such as advisory councils, assessment procedures, evaluation clauses etc., and initiated research programmes to collect evidence and to assess policies regarding their impacts on the various dimensions of sustainable development. This is meant to take possible side effects into account, thereby improving the quality of decision making and contributing to sustainable development.

While there has been a strengthening of political commitment to improve the evidence base of public policy, these expectations are often not met in practice. The provision of evidence and knowledge is obviously not a sufficient condition to change policies or behaviour. To be taken into consideration, scientific evidence has to be perceived as relevant and timely. However, there exists neither a single decision maker nor a uniform science: Policy making is a process with many actors and interests involved. Scientific evidence is constantly challenged by competing theories and methods. In such ambiguous situations, problems and policies to address these problems are constantly challenged, reframed and reconsidered. Scientific evidence is used to support political arguments and to legitimize a course of action, but it is also frequently disregarded, side-lined or even discredited if it challenges established practices and vested interests. A direct impact of scientific evidence on political decisions is apparently rare. In many cases, research has a much more indirect and unintended impact on policy through conceptual use, knowledge creep, and ideas that enable policy makers to gradually revise their framings of the policy problem. In such situations, many scientists experience their involvement in the support of decision making as frustrating. Policy makers and society in turn perceive science as a chorus of often contradicting voices, not useful to base decisions on.

Against this background, the conference will cover two issues:

How can the research process be organised to develop evidence that is considered relevant and timely in the political process to meet the challenges of sustainable development?

How can the policy-science interface be organised in a way that such scientific evidence is taken into consideration?

Eligibility

The conference aims at bringing together scientists from different disciplines and strands of research that produce evidence to support decision-making for sustainable development, and those that study the use of such evidence. Furthermore, we invite policy-makers and practitioners working at the science-policy interface or dealing with issues of evidence use in policy making to share their experiences. In particular, we call for contributions of:

Scholars of political science, law, administrative science etc., studying the use of evidence in decision making;

Scholars of science and technology studies, studying the construction of evidence and the interaction with decision-making;

Scholars in the field of modelling of ecosystems, economic modelling and modelling of social impacts, working on the evidence itself to be used in decision-making.

Application

Paper proposals (max. 300 words) are invited for submission through the conference website by 1 April, 2012 (registration for paper submission will be open soon). Submissions will then be reviewed anonymously by an international reviewer panel. Acceptance will be decided on the basis of scientific quality (theoretical, methodological, new empirical evidence) and best fit with the conference topics. Notification of acceptance will be announced by 30 June, 2012. Full papers are expected by 15 September, 2012.

Open to: Young people between the ages of 18 and 30
Venue: 29 March – 1 April in New Delhi, India

Description

The India Youth Forum is the brainchild of the Youth Time Movement, a group of young activists from across 11 countries who have taken it as their mission to craft a new future through active campaigning and dialogue. Their fundamental goal is to motivate and empower the youth of the world.

In the past, Youth Time has organized two youth forums, in 2010 and 2011, on the island of Rhodes in Greece. In total, over 300 young people from 70 different countries participated in these forums. The movement has also successfully conducted an international summer school in the Altai region. Furthermore, in 2011, they also set up a series of remote projects including an international competition on ‘Space and the future of mankind’, which marked the 50th anniversary of the first human flight into outer space. Some 600 works by young and talented architects, designers, web designers and journalists were entered. Sixty winners got the opportunity to see with their own eyes, and feel, a rocket being sent on a space mission at the Baikonur Cosmodrome. Another remote project was called, ‘My dream education’, which enabled us to assemble an ideal representation of youth education in different countries.

Their mission is to continuously challenge themselves and thus they present to you the India Youth Forum 2012, which will be held from 29 March to 1 April.

The theme for the India Youth Forum is ‘My Country of My Dreams’. We live in troubled times and the responsibility has come upon us to not only dream, but put our dreams into action and build the country of our dreams. The time has come for action and we must now move beyond constructive dialogue and implement our knowledge into a reality which will show effective results.

Costs

The participants are invited to choose which cost they want to cover:

conference fee

travel cost to India

accommodation

Eligibility

Young people between the ages of 18 and 30 are invited to take part.

Deadline: February 2012
Open to: Everybody who is interested in entrepreneurship
Costs: Free

Description

The Lean Launchpad is organizing a free online course for business. In this class you’ll learn how to turn a great idea into a great company.

We now know that startups are not smaller versions of large companies. Large companies execute known business models. They use big company tools – business plans, income statements, revenue models, etc. to help organized their execution. In contrast startups search for a business model. And all the big company tools are irrelevant in the early days of a startup. This class is not about how to write a business plan. It’s not an exercise on how smart you are in a classroom, or how well you use the research library. The end result is not a PowerPoint slide deck for a VC presentation. Instead you will be getting your hands dirty as you encounter the chaos and uncertainty of how a startup actually works.

You’ll learn how to use a business model canvas to brainstorm each part of a company and customer development to get out of the classroom to see whether anyone other than you would want/use your product. Finally, you’ll see how agile development can help you rapidly iterate your product to build something customers will use and buy. Each week will be a new adventure as you test each part of your business model.

The course will be held by Steve Blank, who is a serial entrepreneur and has been a founder or early employee at 8 startups, including 4 resulting in successful IPOs. For the past 7 years he’s been teaching entrepreneurship to Stanford Engineering students. He’s been awarded a Stanford Undergraduate teaching award, and the San Jose mercury news has called him one of the 10 influencers in Silicon Valley.

The class will consist of lecture videos, which are broken into small chunks, usually between eight and twelve minutes each. Some of these may contain integrated quiz questions. There will also be standalone quizzes that are not part of video lectures. There will be approximately two hours worth of video content per week.

Eligibility

Everybody who is interested in running a business and has passion, curiosity, resilience, agility can follow this course.

Costs

There are no costs. This online course is free.

Description

Brave Kids is a program dedicated to children of different backgrounds who use art as a tool for a social change and was started in Wroclaw, Poland in 2009 in frame of Brave Festival – Against Cultural Exile under the patronage of UNESCO and Polish Ministry of Culture and Heritage.

The aim is to build a platform for the groups of young artists from regions of the world affected by various tragedies – natural disasters, political conflicts, homelessness and poverty and show that art gives a chance to overcome traumatic experiences and break free of destructive limitations. For all kids, including those coming from the wealthy world, they offer a chance to build confidence in their own competence and appreciate the value of their own artistic expression. They also try making a counterweight to conformist, mass-distributed pop culture. They believe this to be an important step towards shaping the future of the participants of the project and their communities.

Third edition of Brave Kids will take place in Wroclaw and Szczecin (Poland) for three weeks in June/July 2012 (20.06-03.07). Each group of kids will take part in one of three locations to take part in the process of creative learning and workshops based on the concept “Kids teach kids”. As the output of it three performances will be created and in the end they will be joint in the workshops in Lower Silesia (03.07 – 09.07) to create a final performance of Brave Kids. Finally, in total more than 100 kids will perform on one stage.

In 2012 they will gather 106 kids from countries like: Georgia, Israel, Tanzania, Germany, Uganda, Czech Republic, Norway, Kyrgyzstan, Zimbabwe and Poland. They are still open for groups from Europe.

The final performance of all kids will be seen by public of Brave Festival in Wroclaw and in Headquarters of UNESCO in Paris (09.07 – 11.07).

Similarly to the past years, all invited children will be hosted by the host families who provide accommodation, food and a lot of love.

In the end of the project children are invited to show their performance one more time in UNESCO headquarters in Paris as a part of cultural event prepared by Song of the Goat Association, Brave Kids project and the Polish Delegation to UNESCO. It will be supplemented by an intense Seminar devoted to situation of children in the world and the role of arts and culture in social change.

Eligibility

This call is open to groups of kids who are doing art for social change and would like to share your skills and knowledge as well as learn from others.
