It is one of nine German universities successful in all three funding lines in the federal and state Excellence Initiative, thereby receiving additional funding for its institutional future development strategy. Freie Universität can thus take its place as an “international network university” in the global competition among universities. Its future development strategy is focused around three strategic centers: for cluster development, for international cooperation, and for graduate studies.

The Freie Universität Berlin has the following structure:

Departments (Biology, Chemistry and Pharmacy; Business and Economics; Earth Sciences; Education and Psychology; History and Cultural Studies; Law; Mathematics and Computer Science; Philosophy and Humanities; Physics; Political and Social Sciences; Veterinary Medicine; Medical School – Charité – University Medicine Berlin)
Central Institutes (Institute for East European Studies; Institute for Latin American Studies and John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies)

Centers (Center for French Studies and Center for Italian Studies)

How to apply

Like many other German universities, Freie Universitaet Berlin pre-checks applications from prospective foreign students with non-German general university entrance qualifications through uni-assist.

Foreign students also need to have a proof of German language proficiency.

If the student’s educational background is not sufficient for admission to Freie Universität Berlin, a transition year at a Studienkolleg may be an alternative.

Further information about the application procedure for foreign students can be found here.

Exchange Students and Scholarships

Except for some graduate or postgraduate programs, the Freie Universität Berlin does not charge tuition fees. At present, beginning students only have to pay a minimum amount of about 270 Euro every six months, including public transportation. These regulations are subject to change.
Detailed information on funding for international students in Germany may be obtained from the database of the German Academic Exchange Service .
The Freie Universität Berlin does not award any grants or scholarships.
Students who are not German nationals will obtain grants according to federal legislation only in exceptional cases.
A central objective of Freie Universitaet Berlin is to establish, extend, and coordinate international relationships. The International Office (international.office@fu-berlin.de) is responsible for implementing exchange, scholarship, and mobility programs and for supervising foreign guests.
Freie Universität Berlin has over 130 partner universities.
