Sapienza University of Rome is the largest university in Europe and the oldest of Rome’s three state-funded universities. Sapienza was founded in 1303, more than six centuries before and it has a wide range of fields of study that includes 370 first cycle and second cycle degrees and over 300 professional university masters . It carries out scientific research in various fields of knowledge from pure science to technical branches and classical studies, historical, philosophic and economic-juridical subjects, from Sociology to Psychology, from Communication Sciences to Medicine.

A big number from the 145,000 students attending the University come from abroad: there are more than 5,000 foreign students and incoming and outgoing Erasmus students are about 1,000 per year. There are more than 4,500 professors and the administrative and technical staff counts approximately 5,000 people.

How to apply

Enrollment conditions and procedures vary according to candidates’ place of residence and depending upon the type of course chosen (Degree programmes, Specialisation schools, Master courses, PhD). Students should apply to the foreign Qualifications Secretary for the first administrative procedures. After that they should pass an Italian test as well as an admission test.

Students from Non-EU Countries should apply to the diplomatic delegation of their country of origin prior to the deadline established by the MAE circular letter. The applications are then passed on to the University, by which they are examined and assessed. The assessment results are communicated to the delegations, that contact students and issue for them study visa.

Once they have arrived in Italy, students should pass an Italian test and, if required, an admission test. The international student advisory office enrols the student for the admission test (students from Non-EU Countries are exempted from payment of Euro 26,00 enrollment fee for the admission test).

Foreign students enrolled and living in Italy or other EU Countries should follow the same procedures as Italian students: they just have to obtain the validation of their qualification. More info here

The University of Torino is open to an international perspective both in the field of research and training. It carries out scientific research and organizes courses in all disciplines, except Engineering and Architecture, with remarkable tradition of research in traditional subjects such as history, philosophy, law, economics and medicine but it is actually branching out into modern and important sectors, such as food science, social politics, IT, performing arts and communication sciences.

The 13 Faculties of the University of Torino cover virtually every field of knowledge. Some of the degree courses offered are unique in Italy, such Military Strategy, Biotechnology, Sport Sciences, Restoration and Conservation (in Venaria).
The University is an integral part of the community, changing it for the better, reviving urban and suburban areas, promoting cultural interaction, social integration and development, encouraging dialogue and insight into current realities.

How to apply

Foreign students living abroad may be required to take an Italian language and general culture test (mandatory for three-year and two-year degrees – “lauree triennali” and “specialistiche” – and usually held in September), as well as an admission exam (if required by the degree course selected).

If you are an EU citizen with a foreign Degree you must hand in your documents to, “Ufficio Studenti Stranieri” from the end of July to the end of August (deadlines for Master’s programs may vary).
If you are a non-EU student and you do not live in Italy, you can enrol according to a specific number of available places for foreigners fixed by the Faculties each year for each Degree course. You must submit the application for early enrolment to the Italian Embassy (or Italian General Consulate) in your Country, usually by the end of May.
The Embassy will send your application form with all required documents to the University of Torino that will send back to the Embassy an acceptance letter, which will be sent to you with the study VISA, which is necessary to come in Italy.

It is a public teaching and research university, which – with 9 faculties, 58 departments, 48 institutes and a teaching staff of 2,500 professors – is distinguished by its wide variety of disciplinary fields.
The University has numerous centres, located in prestigious historic buildings and modern edifices. The University’s headquarters can be found in the old Ospedale dei Poveri (Hospital for the Poor) known as “la Ca’ Granda” (the Big House), a 15th-century monumental complex situated in the heart of the historic city centre.

How to apply

Bilateral agreements and special conventions exist with various countries, but as a general rule, applicants must have studied for at least 12 years before applying for a university course.
Those from countries where admission to university is possible after only 10 or 11 years of study must prove that they have attended the local university and passed all necessary examinations for 2 years or 1 year, so as to reach a total of 12 years of study.
European citizens, non-EU citizens resident in Italy with a current, valid permesso di soggiorno (residence permit) and natives of Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Lichtenstein can apply to the university like Italian citizens, submitting their admission application directly to the University, together with the documentation pertaining to their foreign academic qualifications. Therefore they must send the completed Form D (Italian text) to the Italian diplomatic delegation in the country where they obtained their secondary school diploma, so that the Italian embassy or consulate can issue the “Dichiarazione di valore in loco “.

Non-EU citizens resident abroad must submit a pre-application request to the Italian Embassy or Consulate in their country of residence.
Please remember that all non-EU students who obtain a visa for study reasons must report to the Questura (Police Station) no later than 8 days after their arrival.
Graduates who wish to apply for a place on a doctoral programme or in a medical specialisation school must adhere to the instructions in the competitive examination announcements.

Student Scholarships and Exchanges

Foreign students, who are entitled to a tax reduction on the basis of their income, must therefore submit an officially translated document to the students office, which attests to their family’s economic situation in the year previous to the year of enrolment in the University. Otherwise they will be charged the maximum amount of the second instalment.

Scholarships provided by the University
Scholarships provided by the ISU
Scholarships for disabled students
The University of Milan participates in most of the activities relating to training, mobility and the promotion of culture that have been organised by the European Commission (including Erasmus, Leonardo da Vinci (Italian text), Jean Monnet, Tempus). In fact, more than 300 collaboration agreements involving exchanges of students and teaching staff have been established as a result of European Community programmes.
