Before that, there were several higher educational institutions (cour universitaire or the IST) that offered one or two years of academic studies. Luxembourgish students had to go abroad in order to complete the university studies (usually to Belgium, France, Germany, Austria, and the United Kingdom). The new university makes it possible for these students to study in their own country, as well as attract foreign students to Luxembourg. Courses are usually held in two languages: French/English, French/German, or English/German.

How to apply

The enrolment procedure depends on several criteria relating to your personal situation. Enrolment at the University of Luxembourg is personal, required (for it alone confers the status of student), and semestral (it must be renewed at the beginning of each semester).
• Future student

You have recently graduated from secondary school and have chosen to attend the University of Luxembourg. For your first enrolment, you are advised to proceed as follows:

1. Consult the enrolment periods for each degree program.
2. Proceed to your application for admission.
• Student at the UL
If you are a student already enrolled at the University of Luxembourg, you have to proceed to a re-enrolment (even if you have interrupted your studies at our university or if you wish to change degree program).
