The Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje was founded in 1949 and is organized in 21 faculties and 10 research institutes. The University provides teaching activities in technical, natural sciences and mathematics, bio-technical, artistic, medical and social sciences.There are about 40,000 students from the Republic of Macedonia as well as over 700 foreign students.

The University St.Kliment Ohridski in Bitola (UKLO) is the second state university in Republic of Macedonia and the most important institution of higher education in the region of South-Western Macedonia. The number of students during the recent years was about 13.000.
