International students

At University of Minho there not many possibilities for studying on other languages than Portuguese. Most of the classes are taught in Portuguese and students are expected to be fluent enough to be able to follow them. Exams can be held in another language depending on agreement between the student and the lecturer. There is the possibility of developing individual work/project/seminar with supervision in a foreign language common to the supervisor and the student.
In the beginning of each semester the International Relations Office (GRI) organises a Portuguese Language Course of about 60 hours, for all exchange students. It is aimed at providing the basic tools of the Portuguese language in order to make things easier for studying with us.

Admission

The admission at the UC is merit-based. The university has some programmes which are known for higher-than-average selectiveness. To these study programmes like biomedical engineering, pharmacy, medicine or architecture, admission is very difficult process. Acceptance rates may vary significantly from faculty to faculty or from department to department. International applicants usually make up around 10 percent of the applicant pool, and are considered individually by the merits achieved in their respective state of origin.
